EUROPEAN TOUR: Open de Espana
With most of the field having to finish their 3rd round on Sunday morning due to a weather delay, Charl Schwartzel was the
most unhappy of the leaders having double bogeyed the last to finish 3 behind local favourite Carlos Rodiles. However the
expectation got to Rodiles who played the front nine in level par and he was overtaken by Jyoti Randhawa who birdied 1, 6, 7,
8, 12 and 13 to take a two shot lead over Rodiles and Schwartzel, who had made 3 birdies himself. After he bogeyed 15, Randhawa
parred in to set the target at -15. Schwartzel started his charge when he drove the 360 yard par-4 13th for a birdie and then
hit a three iron to 15 feet at 16 and holed the putt for eagle to move to -17. Despite a bogey at the 18th, Schwartzel claimed
his 2nd win on the European Tour, 50 events after his first, by one shot from Rodiles and two from Randhawa.
PGA TOUR: Byron Nelson Championship
"It was an out of body experience." The words of an emotional Scott Verplank who believes that the great Byron Nelson, who
passed away 7 months ago, may actually have chosen him to win the EDS Byron Nelson Championship this year. Verplank called
Byron a good friend for 26 years and playing in his 21st Nelson he finally won after coming close four times. The omens were
good from the moment he teed up at the 4 Seasons resort in Las Colinas, Texas, on Thursday morning. His bad shoulder, which he
has had 3 operations on, magically stopped hurting on Thursday morning and it just got better and better for Verplank. 3 rounds
of 67, 68 and 66 left him a shot behind Luke Donald as they started their final rounds. Verplank carded 3 birdies in a row on
the front nine and when Donald double bogeyed the 9th, the American had the lead. He stretched that lead to 3 shots but the
Englishman closed it to one at 16. Then Verplank, walking off the 18th tee, felt a cool breeze. He later said he knew something
special was happening because it wasn’t actually a cool day at all. Both players parred the last and with Peggy Nelson
watching from beside the 18th green, Verplank was crowned champion. He fell to his knees, looked to the heavens and said thank
you.
LPGA TOUR: Corona Championship
Italy’s Silvia Cavalleri became this season’s third LPGA tour first time winner with a 2 shot victory over Lorena Ochoa in the
Corona Championship at the Tres Marias Golf Club in Mexico. Her 4-day total of 20 under par tied the tournament record set last
year by Ochoa and secured her status as the first Italian to win an LPGA event. Ochoa carded a brilliant 9 under par 64 in the
third round to start the 4th day in the final group with Julieta Granada for the second consecutive year. But it was Cavalleri
who performed best on the last day and her bogey free round left Ochoa and Granada sharing second place. Watching the closing
holes of the tournament was Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hino-yo-sa and he presented Cavalleri with her trophy.
NATIONWIDE TOUR: Henrico County Open
Australian Nick Flanagan became the 50th international player to win on the Nationwide Tour at the weekend when he topped the
Henrico County Open. But the Aussie had to win a 4-man play off to take the title. And even a play off appeared unlikely when
3rd round co-leader Bryn Parry carded 4 birdies on his first 6 holes to charge into a 4 shot lead. But he fell back into the
pack after a bogey on 10 and a double on 11. So Flannigan’s final round of 2 under par 70 saw him finish level with Parry,
Chris Baryla and Roland Thatcher at 13 under. Parry and Thatcher dropped out over the first two holes, so it came down to a
shoot out between Flannigan and Baryla at the par 5 18th which Flannigan won with a birdie. This win moves the 2003 US Amateur
Champion Flannigan to 8th on the money list and he has next season’s PGA Tour firmly in his sights.
