EUROPEAN/PGA TOUR: The Masters
Zach Johnson came away with his first Green Jacket after a superb final round gave him a two shot victory over Retief Goosen,
Rory Sabbatini and Tiger Woods. After a strange week at Augusta, things finally livened up during the final round in the cold
and treacherous conditions. Players started making birdies and eagles and as we moved into the back nine the lead had changed
hands several times. Zach Johnson was first to make his move over the closing 9 holes and with birdies at 13, 14 and 16 had
moved three clear as Goosen and Sabbatini had run out of holes and finished at 3 over-par. Woods looked set to make a charge
after a superb eagle at the 13th got him to within 2, but Woods could only par his way home after that, including finding the
water at the 15th. It meant that Woods has still not won a Major coming from behind. Justin Rose was also in with a chance and
after 2 double bogeys in his first 3 holes he had fought back with 5 birdies in 9 holes. His 2 foot tap in birdie at the par 3
16th had got him to within 1 of Johnson, who had bogeyed the 17th after a 3 putt. Rose finally withered though when his tee
shot at 17th hit the trees and a double bogey ended his hopes. Johnson ended his round with a great up and down at the 18th
to give him a winning 1 over-par 289 total and the first major of the year.
