PGA TOUR: Sony Open
Paul Goydos ended 11 years of waiting to win his second title on the PGA Tour with a 1 shot victory over
Charles Howell III and Luke Donald. It did not look good for Goydos as he bogeyed 2 of his first 3 holes to
fall 4 back, but he kept plugging away and when he rolled in back to back 20 footers on 15 and 16 for birdies
he had moved into the lead. A bogey at 17 meant he was tied with Howell playing the last and both men came up
just short of the green with their second shots at the par 5 18th. Howell hit his chip shot some 15 feet past
the hole, before Goydos looked to have done the same thing, but his chip shot hit the flag and left him a tap
in for birdie to finish on 14 under-par 266. Howell still had a chance to force a play-off but his 15 footer
slid past the hole and Goydos was back in the winners circle.
EUROPEAN TOUR: JoBurg Open
Argentina's Ariel Canete birdied 3 of the last 4 holes to secure a 2 shot victory over South African
Andrew McLardy and win his maiden tournament on the European Tour. Canete started the day with a 1 shot
lead, but an early bogey at the second looked costly. A couple of birdies before the turn steadied the
ship for Canete, but McLardy held in there and both men were tied as they came to the 17th. Canete produced
a superb birdie to take the lead and then made a superb up and down from the bunker at the last for another
birdie to secure victory on a winning 19 under-par 266 total.
EUROPEAN/ASIAN TOUR: The Royal Trophy
Europe completed an emphatic 12.5 to 3.5 victory over Asia in the second staging of The Royal Trophy. Europe
led 6.5 to 1.5 after the foursomes and four balls before going into the final 8 singles matches. Asia needed to
win 7 out of the 8 to claim victory but their hopes ended quickly as first Lee Westwood defeated Toru Taniquchi
4&3 and then Darren Clarke birdied the 18th to halve with Prom Meesawat to give Europe enough points to
retain the trophy. Europe went on to win 4 of the final 6 matches as well to complete a memorable victory.
